Dental Sealants Houston

Greater Protection for Small Crevices

The application of dental sealants can help prevent tooth decay, which means fewer damaged teeth that could potentially result in a lifetime of fillings and crowns. We all know that brushing your teeth properly is an acquired skill, and even with scrupulous brushing, the deep grooves in the back of teeth are often missed. Sealants form a barrier between the back teeth and bacteria, food acids, and plaque formation that can develop within our mouths. If you believe your child could benefit from dental sealants, give our office a call to schedule an appointment.

What are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are a special coating that is usually placed on the chewing surfaces of the back molars. This coating helps protect the deep pits where food can get trapped – causing cavities. Basically, dental sealants create a barrier between decay-causing bacteria and the tooth’s surface and are used to protect teeth from cavities.

Sealants are usually used for young children and teens – or people who are highly prone to cavities. When the coating is applied, the resin dries into a hard, plastic-like material in a matter of seconds. Sometimes, we use a bright light to cure the sealant material. Sealants are invisible and won’t feel any different than the surfaces of your natural teeth. When you come in for your cleaning at Smiles of Memorial, we apply the coating and offer recommendations for changes to at-home care to improve your overall oral health.
